As the fallout continues following a set of bombshell revelations by The Observer, New York Times and Channel 4, the UK data analytics and political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica remains firmly in the spotlight.

So what is Cambridge Analytica, who is behind the company and how much of a threat does it really pose to Western democracy? Here's a reverse timeline of the company, the Facebook data harvesting scandal and how the story has percolated through to the top levels of business and politics in the UK and US.

06 January 2020: Leak of 100,000 new documents further expose CA's efforts to manipulate voters

An anonymous Twitter account has begun to release a trove of more than 100,000 documents related to 68 countries where Cambridge Analytica worked.

The documents will be drip-fed to the public over the coming months to "bare the global infrastructure of an operation used to manipulate voters on 'an industrial scale'," according to the Guardian

The documents are said to come from Brittany Kaiser, a former business development director at Cambridge Analytica who testified before Parliament about the company's conduct and the privacy threats posed by Facebook.

Twitter account @HindsightFiles began releasing the documents on 1 January alongside links to material on elections in Brazil, Kenya and Malaysia.

"Democracies around the world are being auctioned to the highest bidder," reads the @HindsightFiles Twitter profile. "We release the documents that explain how. via Brittany Kaiser".

30 July 2019: New evidence emerges that Cambridge Analytica worked for Leave.EU on the Brexit referendum

Cambridge Analytica worked directly for Leave.EU and UKIP executives without receiving any payment for it, according to documents released by Brittany Kaiser, the former head of business development at the company.

Kaiser supplied MPs with documents that showed the firm had analysed UKIP data and then given it to Leave.EU.
